OpenAI and Anthropic Are Ruining San Francisco

  • Source: SFGATE
  • Verdict: keep
  • Why: The extraction economy finally has a zip code. SFGATE columnist Joe Kukura: asking rents up 14% this year alone, fastest-growing rental rates in the country, an estimated half the population displaced in the last tech cycle, and OpenAI — whose stated mission is "ensure AGI benefits all of humanity" — counting less than $1M in "SF civic contributions" as its community investment. Spokespeople respond by flaunting gross receipts tax payments. The city's own chief economist says AI isn't even leading the recovery; leisure and hospitality is. Meanwhile the corporate standard is "automate or deprecate" positions. The L.L. Bean dunk is the cherry: the barn jacket company has poured millions into a free Acadia shuttle for decades; the maker of ChatGPT gave the city some AI training programs for seniors. Rockefeller gave New York the Rockefeller Center. Carnegie built 2,500 libraries. OpenAI gave us a tax bill and a billboard. Same extraction as the training data, but this time the stolen thing is a city.
